How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Archiving Unused Apps

To help conserve local storage space on devices equipped with compact SSDs or high-speed mobile data connections, Microsoft integrated an automated storage management capability in Windows 11 known as Archive apps. When enabled, Windows silently monitors your application usage. If you rarely launch a particular Microsoft Store application, Windows uninstalls the core program binaries in the background while preserving your personal files and configuration settings.

While well-intentioned, this feature causes unexpected friction when travelling, flying, or working offline. When you click an archived application icon on your Start menu or taskbar, Windows 11 halts execution and displays a download progress indicator while retrieving files from the cloud. In Windows 11, you can disable automated app archiving globally to keep all your programs permanently installed locally.

Disabling App Archiving in Windows 11 Settings

To ensure that all applications remain fully installed and available offline:

  1. Press Win + I to open the Settings application.
  2. Click Apps on the left-hand navigation menu.
  3. Click Advanced app settings on the right-hand panel.
  4. Locate the setting labelled Archive apps (“Save storage space and internet bandwidth by archiving apps you don’t use often. Your files and other data will be saved”).
  5. Toggle the switch next to Archive apps to the Off position.

Once toggled off, Windows 11 stops scanning for dormant software and will never offload your installed applications without your explicit consent.

Restoring an App That Was Already Archived

If an application was archived before you turned this toggle off, its icon remains visible in your Start menu with a subtle cloud download emblem. Simply click the icon while connected to the internet; Windows 11 will pull down the latest package from the Microsoft Store, re-link your local data, and restore the program to full local availability.

Managing Drive Space Proactively Instead of Archiving

If you originally enabled app archiving due to constrained disk space, use native Storage Sense (located under Settings > System > Storage) to automatically delete temporary system files, obsolete update installers, and old Recycle Bin contents instead of offloading executable software.
