How to Stop Windows 10 from Automatically Arranging Desktop Icons

The Cluttered Desktop

Windows 10 provides several ways to organize your desktop. By default, the operating system is often set to “Auto arrange icons.” This means that whenever you download a new file to your desktop, or if you try to drag a specific folder to the bottom right corner of your screen, Windows will immediately grab it and snap it into a rigid, invisible grid starting from the top left corner.

While this keeps things tidy for some, it is infuriating for users who use their desktop as a spatial workspace—grouping work files in one corner and game shortcuts in another. If you want total freedom to place your icons exactly where you drop them, without Windows instantly rearranging your layout, you must disable this automatic snapping feature.

How to Stop Automatic Icon Arrangement

You can turn off this behavior directly from the desktop’s context menu.

  1. Navigate to your Windows Desktop. Ensure all open windows are minimized so you can see your wallpaper.
  2. Find an empty, blank space on the desktop (do not click on an existing icon).
  3. Right-click on the empty space. A context menu will appear.
  4. Hover your mouse over the View option at the very top of the list. A secondary menu will slide out.
  5. Look down this secondary menu for the option labelled Auto arrange icons. If it has a small checkmark next to it, the feature is active.
  6. Click on “Auto arrange icons” to uncheck it.
  7. Optional but recommended: If you still want your icons to look neat but remain in the general area you drop them, leave Align icons to grid checked. If you want absolute freedom (even overlapping icons), uncheck that option as well.

Your icons will no longer snap to the top-left corner. You can now drag and drop your shortcuts anywhere on your screen, and they will stay exactly where you leave them.
