How to Pin Frequently Used Folders to Quick Access in Windows 11

If you work on a complex project, you might find yourself navigating through a tedious maze of folders every single day: opening the C: Drive, clicking “Users,” then “Documents,” then “2024 Projects,” and finally “Q3 Financials.” Clicking through five levels of folders just to start your workday is a massive waste of time. Windows 11 offers a feature called Quick Access that allows you to bookmark these deep folders so they are always one click away.

What is Quick Access?

Quick Access (recently renamed to “Home” in newer versions of Windows 11, though the pinning functionality remains the same) is the permanent list of folders anchored to the top left corner of your File Explorer window. By default, Windows puts your Desktop, Downloads, Documents, and Pictures folders here. However, this area is fully customizable; you can add any folder from anywhere on your hard drive to this list.

How to Pin a Folder

Pinning a folder does not move the actual folder or change where the files are stored. It simply creates a permanent, high-speed shortcut to its location.

  1. Open File Explorer (the yellow folder icon on your taskbar).
  2. Navigate the long way to the specific folder you want to bookmark (e.g., C:\Users\YourName\Documents\2024 Projects\Q3 Financials).
  3. Right-click directly on the folder icon.
  4. From the context menu that appears, click the icon that looks like a pushpin, labeled Pin to Quick access.

Immediately look at the left-hand navigation pane in File Explorer. You will see that your “Q3 Financials” folder is now permanently listed under the Home/Quick Access section, right alongside your Downloads and Desktop folders.

How to Organize Your Pinned Folders

Once you have pinned three or four important folders, you might want them in a specific order (e.g., placing the most urgent project at the very top of the list).

Simply click and hold the pinned folder in the left sidebar, and drag it up or down. A solid black line will appear, indicating where the folder will drop when you release the mouse button. You can rearrange your pinned list however you like.

How to Unpin a Folder

When Q3 is over and you no longer need daily access to those financial documents, you should clean up your sidebar to make room for new projects.

  1. Right-click the folder in the left-hand Quick Access sidebar.
  2. Select Unpin from Quick access (the icon with a pushpin and a slash through it).

The shortcut will disappear instantly, but the original folder and all its contents will remain perfectly safe in their original location on your hard drive.
