How to Pin an App to the Taskbar in Windows 11

The Windows 11 taskbar—the strip running along the bottom of your screen—is your command center. While the Start menu is great for searching, the most efficient way to use your PC is to have your most frequently used applications (like your web browser, email client, or favorite game) permanently docked to the taskbar. This allows you to launch them instantly with a single click, without having to dig through menus or search the system. This process is called “pinning.”

Method 1: Pinning an App from the Start Menu

If you know where the app is located in your Start menu, you can pin it directly from there.

1. Click the Start button (the Windows icon) on your taskbar.
2. Locate the application you want to pin. You might see it in the “Pinned” section of the Start menu, or you can click All apps in the top right to scroll through an alphabetical list of every installed program.
3. Right-click on the application’s icon.
4. A context menu will appear. Click on Pin to taskbar.
5. The icon will instantly appear on your taskbar, usually at the far right end of the current row of icons.

Method 2: Pinning an App That is Already Running

This is often the easiest method. If you already have the program open and running on your screen, you can lock it to the taskbar permanently.

1. Open the application you want to pin (e.g., open Microsoft Word or Google Chrome).
2. Look down at your taskbar; you will see the icon for that app indicating it is currently running.
3. Right-click on the running app’s icon on the taskbar.
4. A small menu will pop up. Click on Pin to taskbar.
5. Now, even when you click the ‘X’ to close the application entirely, its icon will remain docked on the taskbar, ready for you to launch it again tomorrow.

Method 3: Pinning an App from a Desktop Shortcut

If you already have a shortcut for the app sitting on your desktop, you can easily migrate it to the taskbar.

1. Locate the application’s shortcut icon on your Windows desktop.
2. Right-click the icon.
3. In the modern Windows 11 context menu, click on Show more options at the very bottom (or press Shift + F10).
4. In the classic context menu that appears, click on Pin to taskbar.

How to Unpin or Rearrange Apps

• To Rearrange: You are not stuck with the order the icons appear in. Simply click and hold an icon on the taskbar, then drag it left or right to place it exactly where you want it.
• To Unpin: If you no longer use an app frequently, Right-click its icon on the taskbar and select Unpin from taskbar. The app is not deleted from your computer; the shortcut is simply removed from the taskbar.
