When you are playing a resource-intensive video game on a Windows PC, the last thing you want is for a background process, an antivirus scan, or a sudden Windows Update notification to cause your frame rate to drop or your game to stutter. To combat this, Microsoft introduced a dedicated “Game Mode” in Windows 11. When activated, this mode forces the operating system to prioritize your gaming experience above all non-critical background tasks.
What Does Game Mode Actually Do?
Game Mode works by optimizing your PC’s CPU and GPU resource allocation. When Windows detects that a game is running in the foreground, Game Mode kicks in and does the following:
- Prevents Windows Update from performing driver installations.
- Stops Windows Update from sending restart notifications.
- Helps achieve a more stable frame rate depending on the specific game and your system hardware.
- De-prioritizes background tasks (like search indexing or software updates) so they do not steal processing power from your game.
How to Check if Game Mode is Enabled
In most modern Windows 11 installations, Game Mode is turned on by default. However, if you are experiencing performance issues or if you heavily customized your PC, it is worth verifying that it is active.
- Click the Start button and open the Settings app (or press Windows Key + I).
- On the left-hand navigation menu, click on Gaming.
- On the right side of the screen, click on Game Mode.
- You will see a single toggle switch labelled “Game Mode.” Ensure the switch is toggled to the On position.
When Should You Turn Game Mode Off?
For the vast majority of users, Game Mode should be left on permanently. However, there are a few edge cases where it can cause problems. If you are a streamer or content creator who uses background capture software (like OBS Studio) while gaming, Game Mode might aggressively de-prioritize your recording software, resulting in choppy streams or skipped frames in your final video. If you experience these specific issues, simply follow the steps above and toggle Game Mode to the “Off” position while recording.
