Windows 11 makes it incredibly easy to pin applications to the taskbar for quick access, but surprisingly, Microsoft does not provide a direct right-click option to pin a standard folder. If you try to drag and drop a folder onto the taskbar, Windows will simply pin File Explorer instead. However, you can bypass this limitation using a clever shortcut trick.
Step 1: Create a Desktop Shortcut
To trick Windows into pinning a folder, we must first turn it into an application shortcut.
- Navigate to the folder you want to pin using File Explorer.
- Right-click the folder and select Show more options > Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).
- Go to your desktop, right-click the newly created shortcut, and select Properties.
Step 2: Modify the Target Path
We need to add a command telling Windows to open this folder using File Explorer.
- In the Properties window, ensure you are on the Shortcut tab.
- Locate the Target box. It will currently show the path to your folder (e.g.,
"C:\Users\Name\Documents\Work"). - Click inside the Target box, place your cursor at the very beginning of the text, and type
explorer(ensure there is a single space after the word explorer). - The Target box should now look like this:
explorer "C:\Users\Name\Documents\Work". - Click Apply and then OK.
Step 3: Pin the Folder
You can now simply drag and drop this modified shortcut directly onto your Windows 11 taskbar. It will pin itself perfectly. Once pinned, you can safely delete the shortcut from your desktop, and your taskbar folder will continue to work flawlessly.
