Whether you are planning to sell your laptop, give it to a family member, or you simply want a fresh start because the operating system is hopelessly corrupted, a factory reset is the ultimate solution. A factory reset wipes the slate clean, reinstalling a fresh copy of Windows 11 and deleting all third-party software.
Before you begin, you must back up your files. Depending on the option you choose during the reset, all of your personal documents, photos, and game saves could be permanently destroyed. Once your data is safe on an external drive or in the cloud, here is how to factory reset a Windows 11 PC.
Step 1: Access the Recovery Menu
The factory reset tool is built directly into the main Windows 11 Settings app.
- Click the Start button on your taskbar.
- Click the Settings icon (the gear symbol).
- In the left-hand sidebar, ensure you are on the System tab.
- Scroll down the right side of the screen and click on Recovery.
- Under the “Recovery options” section, look for “Reset this PC” and click the Reset PC button.
Step 2: Choose Your Reset Type
A blue pop-up window will appear asking, “Choose an option.” This is the most critical decision in the entire process.
- Keep my files: This option will completely reinstall Windows 11, delete all the software you installed, and erase all your customized settings (like your wallpaper and network passwords). However, it will not touch the personal files saved in your Documents, Pictures, or Desktop folders. Use this if you are keeping the computer but just want to fix severe software glitches.
- Remove everything: This is the nuclear option. It deletes the operating system, all your software, and every single personal file on the hard drive. Choose this if you are selling or giving away the computer.
Step 3: Choose How to Reinstall Windows
Once you select what happens to your files, Windows will ask how it should reinstall the operating system.
- Cloud download: Your PC will connect to the internet, download a brand-new, fully updated copy of Windows 11 directly from Microsoft’s servers, and install it. This requires at least 4GB of data and a stable Wi-Fi connection, but it is the safest method if your current installation is severely corrupted by viruses.
- Local reinstall: The PC will attempt to rebuild Windows 11 using the hidden recovery files already stored on your hard drive. This is much faster and does not require the internet, but if those local files are damaged, the reset will fail.
Step 4: Confirm and Reset
You will reach a final “Ready to reset this PC” screen summarizing all the choices you just made.
- Read the summary carefully.
- If you chose “Remove everything,” make absolutely sure your backup drive is disconnected from the PC so it does not get accidentally wiped.
- Click the Reset button.
Your computer will instantly reboot. Do not touch the keyboard or the power button. The process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours depending on the speed of your hard drive. Once it finishes, you will be greeted by the initial Windows 11 setup screen, exactly like the day you bought it.
