How to Hide the Taskbar in Windows 11

The Screen Real Estate Vector

The Windows 11 Taskbar, while visually modernized, still permanently consumes a significant horizontal strip across the absolute bottom of your monitor. If you are operating on a small 13-inch laptop screen, or if you are engaged in deep, focused tasks like video editing or graphic design where every single pixel of vertical space is crucial, this permanent UI element is highly disruptive. You must instruct the operating system to dynamically retract the Taskbar when it is not actively being used.

How to Hide the Taskbar

Windows 11 includes an auto-hide behaviour that mathematically pushes the Taskbar exactly one pixel below the bottom edge of the screen, summoning it only when you intentionally move your mouse to that location.

1. Right-click on any blank, empty space on the Windows 11 Taskbar.
2. A small context menu will pop up containing only one option. Click on Taskbar settings.
3. This will launch the primary Settings app directly into the Personalization matrix. Scroll down to the absolute bottom of the main pane.
4. Click on the section titled Taskbar behaviors to expand it.
5. The second option in the expanded list is a checkbox labelled Automatically hide the taskbar.
6. Check this box.

The modification is instantaneous. The Taskbar will immediately slide downwards and vanish entirely from your screen, granting your active application access to the full vertical resolution of the monitor. The Retrieval Mechanic: To interact with the Start menu or check the time, simply slam your mouse cursor into the absolute bottom edge of the screen. The Taskbar will instantly slide back up, wait for you to click something, and then vanish again the moment you move your mouse away.
