By default, Windows 11 requires a double-click to open files, launch applications, and expand directories in File Explorer. While this behaviour is familiar to most desktop users and prevents accidental file launches, it requires repetitive mouse clicking that can reduce browsing speed and cause unnecessary finger strain over long working sessions. For users who prefer a streamlined, web-like navigation experience, Windows 11 includes a built-in option to open items with a single click while selecting items simply by hovering over them.
Switching File Explorer to single-click mode transforms how you interact with your desktop and directories. It allows you to launch documents and navigate folders instantly with a single touch of the primary mouse button, mimicking the intuitive link-clicking behaviour found across internet browsers.
How Single-Click Mode Works in Windows 11
When you switch File Explorer to single-click navigation, Windows alters two distinct interaction behaviours:
- Opening an Item: Clicking once on any file, folder, shortcut, or drive immediately opens or executes it.
- Selecting an Item: Because a single click opens the item, selection is handled by hovering. Placing your mouse pointer over an icon or file name for a fraction of a second highlights and selects the item without launching it. This allows you to inspect file details, view properties, or drag items into new folders.
- Underlining Icon Titles: Windows offers two visual styles for single-click mode: underlining file titles consistently like web hyperlinks, or only showing an underline when you hover your mouse pointer over the item.
How to Enable Single-Click to Open Items in File Explorer
You can configure single-click mode directly through the File Explorer Options dialogue window:
- Press Windows + E on your keyboard to open File Explorer.
- In the top command bar, click the See more icon (the three horizontal dots
...) located near the right side of the toolbar. - Select Options from the drop-down menu to open the Folder Options window.
- Ensure you are on the General tab.
- Look for the section labelled Click items as follows.
- Select the radio button beside Single-click to open an item (point to select).
- Choose your preferred visual underline style:
- Underline icon titles consistent with my browser: Permanently underlines all file and folder labels across your system.
- Underline icon titles only when I point at them: Keeps your desktop and folder views visually clean, displaying an underline only when your mouse hovers over an item.
- Click Apply, then click OK to confirm your selection.
The new clicking behaviour takes effect immediately across all File Explorer windows and your Windows 11 desktop without requiring a system restart or user logoff.
How to Select Multiple Files in Single-Click Mode
Adapting to single-click navigation requires a minor shift when managing multiple files or folders at once. Because clicking an item now launches it, selecting multiple files can be accomplished using several reliable methods:
Method 1: Hovering and Keyboard Modifiers
- Contiguous Selection: Hover your mouse cursor over the first file until it highlights. Hold down the Shift key, then click on the last file in the range. All files between the two points will be selected.
- Non-Contiguous Selection: Hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard. While keeping Ctrl pressed, click on each individual file you wish to include in your selection. Holding the Ctrl modifier prevents Windows from executing the files upon clicking.
Method 2: Using Item Checkboxes
Enabling File Explorer checkboxes makes selecting files in single-click mode effortless and visual:
- In File Explorer, click the View menu on the top toolbar.
- Hover over Show.
- Click Item check boxes to place a tick beside it.
- Now, hovering over any file reveals a small square checkbox in its upper-left corner. Simply click the checkbox to select or deselect items without triggering the single-click launch behaviour.
Method 3: Marquee Selection (Click and Drag)
You can select groups of files by clicking on an empty area of the folder window and dragging a selection rectangle across the desired icons. As long as you do not click directly on a file or folder title, Windows will draw a selection box rather than opening an item.
How to Revert Back to Double-Click Mode in Windows 11
If you find that single-click mode leads to too many accidental file launches or does not suit your everyday workflow, you can restore standard double-click navigation at any time:
- Open File Explorer (Windows + E).
- Click the three dots (
...) on the command bar and select Options. - Under the General tab, find the Click items as follows section.
- Select Double-click to open an item (single-click to select).
- Click Apply, followed by OK.
Standard Windows interaction will be restored instantly, returning file selection to a single click and file execution to a double-click.
