How to Enable the On-Screen Keyboard in Windows 11

Whether your physical keyboard has suddenly stopped working, you are using a Windows 11 tablet without a Type Cover, or you simply need to enter a secure password without risking a physical keylogger, the built-in On-Screen Keyboard (OSK) is an invaluable accessibility tool. Unlike the basic touch keyboard, the full OSK provides all standard keys, including function rows, navigation keys, and a number pad.

How to Launch the On-Screen Keyboard

There are a few different ways to open the keyboard, depending on whether your physical keyboard is completely broken or partially functional.

Method 1: The Quick Shortcut (If your keyboard works partially)
Press the Windows Key + Ctrl + O simultaneously. The keyboard will instantly appear on your screen.

Method 2: Using the Settings App (If your keyboard is broken)
If you can only use your mouse, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button and open the Settings app (the gear icon).
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Accessibility.
  3. Scroll down to the “Interaction” section and click on Keyboard.
  4. Look for the On-screen keyboard toggle switch at the very top of the page.
  5. Click the toggle to turn it On.

You can now use your mouse cursor to click the keys and type into any application. The keyboard will remain active floating on top of your windows until you explicitly close it by clicking the ‘X’ in its top-right corner.
