By default, File Explorer in Windows 11 displays only the name of the currently active folder in its title bar and window frame. While this minimalistic design reduces visual clutter, it creates friction for power users, developers, and system administrators who manage complex directory trees, identical folder names across separate drives, or deeply nested network shares.
Enabling the full folder path in the File Explorer title bar allows you to verify your absolute location on disk at a single glance without needing to click into the breadcrumb address bar.
Enabling Full Path in Title Bar via Folder Options
The standard and most reliable method to activate this feature is through File Explorer Folder Options:
- Press Win + E to open File Explorer in Windows 11.
- Click the See more button (the three horizontal dots
...) on the top command ribbon. - Select Options from the drop-down menu to open the Folder Options dialogue.
- Switch to the View tab.
- Under the Advanced settings list, scroll down and tick the checkbox labelled Display the full path in the title bar.
- Click Apply, then click OK.
When you navigate between folders, File Explorer will immediately reflect the complete drive and folder structure (for example, C:\Users\Username\Documents\Projects) directly across the active window bar.
Configuring Full Path in Title Bar via Windows Registry
For automated system deployments or IT administration across enterprise fleets, you can enforce this setting via the Windows Registry:
- Press Win + R, type
regedit, and press Enter. - Navigate to the following key path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState - In the right pane, locate the string value named
FullPath. If it does not exist, right-click an empty area, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name itFullPath. - Double-click
FullPathand set its Value data to1. - Click OK and restart File Explorer via Task Manager.
Quickly Copying the Full Path in Windows 11
In addition to viewing the directory path in the title bar, Windows 11 provides a built-in shortcut to copy the exact path of any folder or file to your clipboard. Select any item in File Explorer and press Ctrl + Shift + C (or right-click and choose Copy as path). This copies the complete path surrounded by quotes, ready for pasting into command prompts, PowerShell scripts, or documentation.
