In older corporate network environments, IT administrators frequently required computers to route all web traffic through a centralized filtering server. Windows accommodates this via the “Use a proxy server for your LAN” setting. When enabled, this setting forces your web browsers and system updates to send their requests to a specific IP address on your network, rather than connecting directly to the internet via your default gateway.
However, if you are a home user, or if your company has modernized its network infrastructure, this setting should never be turned on manually. In fact, if you suddenly find this setting enabled and you did not configure it yourself, it is a massive red flag. Malware and adware frequently hijack this setting, forcing your computer to route its traffic through a malicious local proxy (often running hidden in the background of your own PC) so the attackers can intercept your data or inject advertisements into your browser. You must disable this setting immediately to restore a direct, secure connection to the internet.
How to Turn Off the LAN Proxy Server
You can remove the manual proxy configuration via the Windows Network settings.
- Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press
Windows Key + I). - In the Settings window, click on Network & Internet.
- In the left-hand navigation pane, scroll down to the bottom and click on Proxy.
- Look at the bottom section of the right-hand pane, labelled Manual proxy setup.
- Locate the toggle switch for Use a proxy server.
- Toggle the switch to the Off position.
- The IP address and Port text boxes below it will become greyed out. (If they contained suspicious numbers, immediately run a full system antivirus scan).
Your Windows 10 machine will now bypass any manual proxy configurations and attempt to route its traffic directly through your router to the broader internet.
