How to Disable the Google Docs ‘Full screen’ View (Compact Controls)

The Hidden Toolbars

Google Docs includes a “Full screen” view (often referred to as Compact Controls) that is designed to maximize your writing space on smaller laptop screens. When activated, this mode hides the main Google Docs menu bar (File, Edit, View, etc.) and the formatting toolbar, leaving only the document page visible. You trigger this mode by clicking the small upward-pointing arrow in the extreme top-right corner of the interface (or by pressing Ctrl + Shift + F).

While useful for distraction-free writing, many users accidentally trigger this mode by hitting the keyboard shortcut by mistake, or by misclicking while aiming for the Share button. When the toolbars suddenly vanish, it can be confusing to figure out how to format text or change fonts. If you find yourself accidentally hiding your tools, you can easily restore the standard view.

How to Disable Full Screen View (Restore Toolbars)

Restoring the toolbars simply requires toggling the view mode back off.

  1. Look at the very top of your Google Docs window. If you are in Full screen/Compact mode, the grey formatting toolbar will be completely missing.
  2. Move your mouse to the extreme top-right corner of the screen (just below the browser’s close button, near your Google profile picture).
  3. Look for a small icon depicting a downward-pointing arrow.
  4. Click that downward-pointing arrow.

Alternatively, you can simply press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + F (or Cmd + Shift + F on a Mac). The main menu bar and the formatting toolbar will instantly slide back down and remain pinned to the top of your screen, restoring full access to all your editing tools.
