How to Disable the Windows 10 ‘Taskbar search history’ (Recent Searches)

The Intrusive Search Menu

In Windows 10, clicking the Search box on the taskbar (or pressing the Windows key and typing) opens a large search panel. By default, this panel dedicates a significant amount of space to displaying your “Recent searches.” It acts as a history log, showing the last several apps, files, or web queries you searched for.

While this is intended to help you quickly re-open a document you were just working on, it presents a major privacy issue. If you share a computer with family members, or if you frequently present your screen in business meetings, anyone looking at your screen when you open the Search menu will instantly see your previous queries. If you searched for a confidential client file or a sensitive personal topic, it is broadcast right there. To maintain your privacy, you should disable the recent search history.

How to Disable Recent Searches in the Taskbar

You can turn off the search history feature in the Windows Settings app.

  1. Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
  2. In the Settings menu, click on Search (represented by a magnifying glass icon).
  3. In the left-hand navigation pane, select Permissions & History.
  4. Scroll down the right-hand pane until you find the “History” section.
  5. Look for the toggle switch labelled Search history on this device.
  6. Toggle the switch to the Off position.
  7. (Optional) Immediately below the switch, click the Clear device search history button to wipe any existing entries.

The next time you click the taskbar search box, the “Recent searches” list will be completely blank, ensuring your past queries remain private.
