The Accidental Formatting
Google Docs provides a robust set of tools for formatting text, including the “Paragraph borders and shading” menu. This tool allows you to draw solid lines above, below, or around a specific block of text, or fill the background of that paragraph with a solid color. This is excellent for creating callout boxes or separating distinct sections of a report.
However, once you apply a border or shading to a paragraph, that formatting becomes “sticky.” If you place your cursor at the end of that styled paragraph and press Enter to start a new line, Google Docs assumes you want the new paragraph to look exactly the same. It will automatically apply the borders and background colors to the new line. If you only wanted a single highlighted box, you must manually strip this formatting away from your new text.
How to Remove Paragraph Borders and Shading
You can clear this persistent formatting using the Format menu.
- Highlight the new text (or place your cursor in the empty new paragraph) where the unwanted borders or background colors have appeared.
- At the top of the screen, click on the Format menu.
- Hover your mouse over Paragraph & line spacing to open the sub-menu.
- Click on Borders and shading at the very bottom of the list.
- A popup menu will appear. Look at the bottom left corner of this popup.
- Click the Reset button.
- Click Apply.
The sticky formatting will be instantly stripped away. Your new paragraph will return to standard, unstyled text, allowing you to continue typing normally without accidentally creating massive, colored blocks down the rest of your document.
