How to Disable the Windows 10 ‘Show notifications on the lock screen’ Option

In Windows 10, the lock screen is the barrier between your computer’s data and unauthorized users. It requires a password or PIN to bypass. However, by default, Windows allows applications to display push notifications directly on top of this locked screen. This means that if someone sends you a message on Skype, Slack, or via email, a preview of that message will pop up on your monitor, even if you are away from your desk and the computer is securely locked.

This is a massive privacy vulnerability in office environments or shared households. Anyone walking past your computer can read the contents of your incoming messages, calendar reminders, or system alerts without needing your password. To ensure that your private data remains completely hidden until you actively unlock your session, you must disable lock screen notifications.

How to Disable Notifications on the Lock Screen

You can turn off this feature entirely within the System settings.

1. Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
2. In the Settings menu, click on System.
3. In the left-hand navigation pane, select Notifications & actions.
4. Scroll down the right-hand pane to the “Notifications” section.
5. Look for the checkbox labelled Show notifications on the lock screen.
6. Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.
7. (Optional) You should also uncheck the box immediately below it labelled Show reminders and incoming VoIP calls on the lock screen for maximum privacy.

Once disabled, your lock screen will only display the background image and the clock. All incoming messages and alerts will be held securely in the Action Center, completely invisible until you successfully type your password and log into your desktop.
