The Blinking Network Icon
In older versions of Windows, the network icon in the system tray would actively blink or change state to indicate when data was being transmitted or received. While Windows 10 largely removed the aggressive blinking, certain network adapter drivers or third-party utilities can still hook into the notification area to display real-time network activity animations (like tiny flashing monitors or data graphs). This “Show network activity” behavior is designed to give you instant visual confirmation that your internet connection is active.
However, if you are downloading large files, streaming video, or constantly syncing with cloud storage, this constant visual flashing can be incredibly distracting in your peripheral vision. It draws your eye away from your primary work for no practical benefit—if your internet is working, you usually don’t need a blinking icon to confirm it. To maintain a calm, static desktop environment that allows you to focus, you should hide these active network status indicators.
How to Hide Network Activity Icons
You can prevent active network icons from showing by managing your Taskbar Notification Area settings.
- Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon.
- Click on Personalization.
- Select Taskbar from the left-hand menu.
- Scroll down to the Notification area section and click Select which icons appear on the taskbar.
- Look through the list for your network adapter’s specific utility or any icon displaying active data graphs.
- Click the toggle switch next to that icon to turn it Off.
- (Optional) Alternatively, you can click the Network icon itself and toggle it off to completely remove the network status from the taskbar, forcing it into the hidden overflow menu (the upward arrow).
Your taskbar will now remain calm and static, regardless of how much data your PC is actively downloading or uploading in the background.
