The Dropdown Animation Effect
In Windows 10, when you click on a dropdown menu (technically known as a “combo box”), the list of options does not instantly appear on your screen. Instead, Windows applies a micro-animation governed by the “Slide open combo boxes” setting. This visual effect causes the list of options to quickly slide downwards from the selection box, unrolling like a window blind.
While this sliding animation is intended to make the interface feel smooth and modern, it introduces an artificial delay. You are forced to wait for the animation to finish before you can reliably click on the bottom-most options in the list. Over the course of a day filled with data entry or navigating complex settings menus, these fractions of a second add up, making the operating system feel slightly sluggish. If you value raw speed and want your dropdown menus to snap open instantly, you should disable this sliding effect.
How to Turn Off the Sliding Animation
You can force combo boxes to open instantly via the advanced system performance settings.
- Click the Start button and type Advanced system settings.
- Select View advanced system settings from the search results. This directly opens the System Properties window to the Advanced tab.
- Under the Performance section near the top, click the Settings… button.
- A new “Performance Options” window will appear. Ensure you are on the Visual Effects tab.
- Scroll through the list of visual effects and locate the checkbox labelled Slide open combo boxes.
- Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.
- Click Apply, and then click OK.
From now on, whenever you click a dropdown menu in a standard Windows application, the list of options will instantly materialize without any sliding animation, allowing for much faster selection.
