The Disappearing Taskbar
Windows 10 includes a feature designed to maximize your screen real estate by automatically hiding the taskbar. When this option is enabled, the taskbar slides off the bottom of the screen, completely disappearing from view. It only reappears when you physically drag your mouse cursor to the very bottom edge of the display, and slides back down as soon as you move your mouse away.
While this is fantastic for small tablets where every pixel counts, it can be incredibly frustrating on a standard desktop monitor. The hiding animation creates a slight delay every time you want to switch applications, check the time, or see your system tray icons. Furthermore, if you are running a full-screen application or game in “Windowed Borderless” mode, the auto-hiding taskbar sometimes fails to reappear when summoned. If you prefer your taskbar to be permanently visible and locked in place, you must disable the auto-hide feature.
How to Disable Auto-Hiding for the Taskbar
You can force the taskbar to remain visible through the Personalization settings.
- Right-click on any empty space on your Windows 10 taskbar.
- Select Taskbar settings from the context menu. (Alternatively, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar).
- Look for the toggle switch labelled Automatically hide the taskbar in desktop mode.
- Toggle the switch to the Off position.
- (Optional) If you also use your device as a tablet, look just below that setting and ensure Automatically hide the taskbar in tablet mode is also turned Off.
The taskbar will immediately pop up (if it was hidden) and will remain permanently anchored to the edge of your screen, providing instant access to your pinned apps and the Start button at all times.
