The Cost of Eye Candy
Windows 11 is heavily stylized with fluid animations. When you click the Start Menu, it doesn’t just appear; it slides up from the taskbar and bounces slightly into place. When you minimize a window, it shrinks down into its icon. While these animations make the operating system feel modern and polished, they introduce a microsecond of artificial lag into every single interaction. For power users working on high-refresh-rate monitors, or for users running Windows 11 on older, struggling laptops, these animations make the computer feel sluggish and unresponsive. If you want a snappy, instant experience, you should turn off the visual flair.
How to Disable UI Animations
Microsoft groups all of these motion settings under the accessibility menus, allowing you to disable them globally with one switch.
- Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Accessibility.
- In the main window, click on Visual effects.
- Look for the toggle switch labeled Animation effects.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position.
The Snappy Result
The change is instantaneous. Close the settings window and press the Windows key on your keyboard. The Start Menu will instantly snap onto the screen without any sliding or fading. Open a File Explorer window and click the minimize button; it will vanish instantly. By eliminating the artificial animation timers, the operating system will feel significantly faster and more responsive to your physical inputs.
