How to Block Tailored Experiences (Diagnostic Ads) in Windows 11

The Diagnostic Billboard

Windows 11 constantly monitors your hardware usage, application history, and typing data. Microsoft refers to this telemetry as “Diagnostic Data.” However, by default, the operating system leverages this exact data to inject highly targeted “Tailored Experiences” directly into your Start Menu, Lock Screen, and notification center. This means if you search for a lot of gaming content, Windows will begin pushing Xbox Game Pass advertisements directly to your desktop. If you refuse to allow your operating system to weaponize your telemetry for corporate marketing, you must disable the personalization engine.

How to Block Tailored Experiences

You can permanently sever the connection between your diagnostic data and the advertising engine via the Privacy settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
  3. In the main window, click on Diagnostics & feedback.
  4. Scroll down to the section labeled “Tailored experiences.”
  5. Click the small downward arrow to expand the section.
  6. Locate the master toggle switch labeled “Let Microsoft use your diagnostic data, excluding info about websites you browse, to offer you personalized tips, ads, and recommendations.”
  7. Toggle this switch to the Off position.

A Neutral Operating System

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely sever the internal link between the telemetry collection daemon and the UI rendering engine. Microsoft is now legally and technically blocked from analyzing your local usage patterns to push targeted upselling banners into your workflow. The operating system will revert to a completely neutral state, treating you as an anonymous local user rather than a demographic marketing profile.
