The Cluttered Suggestions Box
Windows 11 features a highly robust window management system known as Snap Assist. When you drag a window to the edge of your screen to “snap” it into place, Windows immediately fills the remaining empty space with a chaotic timeline-style grid, showing thumbnails of every other open application on your system. It aggressively prompts you to click one of these thumbnails to fill the void. While some users find this helpful, power users often find it incredibly distracting. If you are trying to snap a reference document to the side while keeping your desktop visible behind it, the sudden appearance of twenty pulsating thumbnails completely breaks your concentration.
Silencing the Visual Prompt
To stop Windows 11 from automatically cluttering your screen with suggestions every time you snap a window, you must disable the specific Snap Assist prompt feature in the multitasking settings.
Press the Windows Key and click the gear icon to open the Settings app. Ensure you are on the System tab in the left-hand navigation pane. In the main window, click on Multitasking. At the top of this page, you will see a toggle switch labelled Snap windows. Do not turn this main toggle off, as that will completely break the ability to snap windows. Instead, click the small downward-facing arrow located to the far right of the “Snap windows” text to expand a hidden menu. Within this expanded list, look for the checkbox labelled When I snap a window, suggest what I can snap next. Click this checkbox to remove the checkmark. The change is immediate. You can now snap a window to the side of your monitor, and the remaining space will stay perfectly clean and empty.
