How to Disable Recent Documents Tracking in Windows 11 File Explorer

The Privacy Vulnerability

By default, the Windows 11 File Explorer heavily monitors your file usage. Every time you open a PDF, edit a Word document, or view an image, the operating system logs that file and permanently pins a shortcut to it in the “Recent” section of the Quick Access menu (Home). If you share your computer with coworkers, family members, or frequently present your screen in Zoom meetings, this is a massive privacy breach. Anyone who opens a folder on your PC can instantly see exactly what sensitive financial documents or personal photos you were looking at 5 minutes ago. You must paralyze this tracking feature.

How to Disable Recent Documents Tracking

You can permanently sever the logging mechanism via the Folder Options menu.

  1. Open the File Explorer (press the Windows Key + E).
  2. In the top toolbar, click the three horizontal dots (…) and select Options from the drop-down menu.
  3. In the Folder Options window, ensure you are on the General tab.
  4. Look at the bottom of the window in the “Privacy” section.
  5. Uncheck the box labeled “Show recently used files in Quick access” (or “Show recent files in Home” on newer builds).
  6. Click the Clear button right next to it to permanently wipe the existing database of your past file activity.
  7. Click Apply, then click OK.

A Blank Slate

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for logging your file-open history. The “Recent” section in your File Explorer will immediately go blank. Moving forward, you can open thousands of private documents, and the operating system will absolutely refuse to log a single one of them. Your Quick Access menu will only display folders you intentionally and manually pinned there, guaranteeing absolute local privacy.
