How to Disable the “Find My Device” Tracking Feature in Windows 11

The Permanent GPS Ping

Windows 11 includes an anti-theft feature known as “Find My Device.” When enabled, the operating system routinely wakes up the Wi-Fi adapter or GPS hardware, calculates your exact physical location, and silently uploads those coordinates to your Microsoft Account. While this allows you to log in from another computer and locate a stolen laptop, it also means Microsoft possesses a permanent, rolling, 24/7 timeline of exactly where your computer has been. If you value absolute location privacy over the ability to track a stolen device, you must sever this tracking link.

How to Turn Off Find My Device

You can permanently disconnect your laptop from the Microsoft tracking grid via the Privacy settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
  3. In the main window, under the “Security” section, click on Find my device.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch labeled Find my device.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position.

Total Location Privacy

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the background location daemon. The operating system will instantly cut the specific network connection responsible for uploading your coordinates to the cloud. If your laptop is stolen, you will have absolutely no way to locate it through Microsoft’s servers, but in exchange, you are guaranteed that your daily physical movements are completely untracked and entirely private.
