The Silent Filter
Windows 11 includes a sophisticated notification management system originally called “Focus Assist” (recently renamed to “Do not disturb” in newer updates). By default, this engine is designed to automatically silence your notifications when you are duplicating your display to a projector, or when you are playing a full-screen video game. While well-intentioned, the algorithm frequently misfires. It will routinely swallow critical emails, Slack messages, or calendar reminders, hiding them silently in the notification center without playing a sound. If you use your computer for work and demand to receive every single notification exactly when it happens, you must shut down the automated filter.
How to Turn Off Do Not Disturb (Focus Assist)
You can completely terminate the notification filtering engine via the System settings.
- Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on System.
- In the main window, click on Notifications.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled Do not disturb (or “Focus assist” on older builds).
- Toggle this switch to the Off position.
- Next, click on the text “Turn on do not disturb automatically” to expand the advanced menu.
- Uncheck every single box in this list (e.g., “When duplicating my display,” “When playing a game,” “During these times”) to ensure the system never turns it back on automatically.
Absolute Delivery
The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the background notification silencer. Every single email, chat message, and system alert will immediately blast its designated sound and slide onto your screen, completely ignoring whether you are playing a game or watching a video.
