How to Disable Optional Diagnostic Data in Windows 11

The Telemetry Pipeline

Windows 11 continuously transmits background data to Microsoft’s servers. While “Required” diagnostic data is mathematically mandatory for the operating system to function and receive security patches, Microsoft aggressively pushes users to enable “Optional” diagnostic data. This secondary telemetry pipeline vacuums up highly specific information: exactly which websites you visit in Edge, how long you use specific third-party applications, and detailed crash reports that may contain fragments of your personal documents that were stored in RAM during the crash. For privacy-conscious professionals, transmitting this behavioral metadata is unacceptable. You must sever the optional telemetry bridge.

How to Disable Optional Diagnostic Data

You can permanently restrict the operating system’s upload parameters via the Privacy settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
  3. Under the “Windows permissions” section, click on Diagnostics & feedback.
  4. Click to expand the Diagnostic data section.
  5. Toggle the switch labeled Send optional diagnostic data to the Off position.
  6. Immediately scroll down and click the Delete button under “Delete diagnostic data” to wipe the local cache of previously collected telemetry.

Absolute Data Minimization

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will aggressively throttle the background telemetry daemon. The operating system is now technically barred from cataloging your personal app usage or web browsing history for upload. It will strictly limit its outbound transmissions to the bare minimum required for Windows Update (hardware configuration and critical OS errors), guaranteeing that Microsoft cannot build a behavioral profile based on your daily desktop workflow.
