How to Disable Optional Diagnostic Data in Windows 11

The Telemetry Pipeline

Windows 11 constantly monitors the internal health of your operating system. Microsoft divides this telemetry into two tiers: “Required” (basic data necessary to keep the OS functioning and updated) and “Optional.” Optional diagnostic data is highly intrusive. It includes detailed logs of the websites you visit in the Edge browser, how you use specific features within third-party apps, and extensive memory dumps when a program crashes (which can inadvertently include snippets of the document you were working on). To maximize your privacy, you must sever the optional telemetry pipeline.

How to Disable Optional Diagnostic Data

You can permanently restrict the operating system’s data collection to the bare minimum via the Privacy settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
  3. Under the “Windows permissions” section, click on Diagnostics & feedback.
  4. Locate the section labeled Diagnostic data and click to expand it.
  5. Toggle the switch labeled “Send optional diagnostic data” to the Off position.

A Hardened OS

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for harvesting your application usage and browser history. The operating system will instantly revert to the “Required” telemetry tier. It will absolutely refuse to upload memory dumps, inking data, or detailed usage profiles to the Microsoft cloud. Your daily workflow and app interactions are now strictly confined to your local hardware, guaranteeing a significantly higher baseline of privacy.
