How to Disable the Advertising ID (Targeted Ads) in Windows 11

The Third-Party Tracking Profile

Windows 11 generates a unique, device-specific cryptographic string known as an “Advertising ID.” By default, the operating system allows third-party applications downloaded from the Microsoft Store (such as free games, news readers, or utilities) to access this ID in the background. These applications use your Advertising ID to silently build a unified behavioral profile of your app usage across your entire machine, which they then use to serve you highly targeted, personalized advertisements. If you refuse to be tracked and monetized by third-party software developers, you must destroy this digital fingerprint.

How to Disable the Advertising ID

You can permanently paralyze the operating system’s ability to broadcast your tracking profile via the Privacy settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
  3. Under the “Windows permissions” section, click on General.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch labeled “Let apps show me personalized ads by using my advertising ID.”
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position.

Absolute Application Sandboxing

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely sever the internal API bridge that allows third-party software to query the operating system for your unique Advertising ID. The OS is now technically barred from providing a unified tracking token. If a free application attempts to execute a background scan to build a behavioral profile, the API call will instantly auto-reject, returning a null value. While you may still see generic ads in free software, they will be entirely randomized and mathematically disconnected from your personal desktop workflow.
