How to Disable Your Advertising ID in Windows 11

The Tracking Token

When you install Windows 11, Microsoft automatically generates a unique, cryptographic string of characters assigned exclusively to your user account. This is your “Advertising ID.” As you use Windows apps, browse the Microsoft Store, and interact with the operating system, this ID is silently used by developers and advertising networks to build a comprehensive profile of your interests, age, and habits. This data is then used to serve you hyper-targeted advertisements across the entire Windows ecosystem. To maintain your privacy, you must permanently destroy this tracking token.

How to Disable Your Advertising ID

You can permanently sever the connection between your account and the advertising networks via the Privacy settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
  3. Under the “Windows permissions” section, click on General.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch labeled “Let apps show me personalized ads by using my advertising ID.”
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position.

Anonymous Browsing

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the API that allows third-party applications to query your Advertising ID. From the perspective of the advertising networks, your unique token has been permanently destroyed. You will still see advertisements in free Windows apps (like Solitaire), but they will now be completely generic, untargeted, and mathematically disconnected from your personal computing habits, guaranteeing a massive increase in your daily digital privacy.
