How to Disable Activity History Tracking in Windows 11

The Local Tracker

Windows 11 includes a built-in diagnostic feature called “Activity History.” When enabled, the operating system aggressively records a local log of exactly which applications you open, which websites you visit (in Microsoft Edge), and which files you edit on a daily basis. Microsoft uses this data to power features like the “Recommended” section in the Start Menu and to sync your workflow across multiple devices. However, if you share a computer with colleagues or family members, this detailed log is a massive privacy vulnerability, effectively giving anyone access to a timeline of your exact computer usage. You must disable the tracking engine.

How to Turn Off Activity History

You can permanently block the operating system from recording your actions via the Privacy settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
  3. In the main window, scroll down to the “Windows permissions” section.
  4. Click on Activity history.
  5. Locate the toggle switch labeled “Store my activity history on this device.”
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position.
  7. (Optional but Recommended): Click the Clear button located just below the toggle to completely delete the existing tracking log from your hard drive.

A Private Session

The change is instantaneous. Windows 11 will completely terminate the background monitoring service. The operating system will immediately stop recording your daily workflow, guaranteeing that your application usage, file history, and browsing data remain entirely private and unlogged.
