How to Connect a Bluetooth Device to Windows 11 using Swift Pair

Connecting Bluetooth peripherals—like wireless mice, keyboards, or headphones—to a PC has historically been a tedious process involving diving deep into the Settings menu, searching for generic device names, and manually initiating pairing modes. To streamline this process, Microsoft introduced a feature called “Swift Pair” in Windows 10, which has been significantly refined in Windows 11.

Swift Pair allows compatible Bluetooth devices to announce their presence to your computer automatically. Instead of navigating menus, a small, convenient notification pops up on your screen the moment you turn the device on, allowing you to connect with a single click.

Prerequisites for Swift Pair

Before you begin, you must ensure your system meets the requirements:

  • A Compatible Device: Swift Pair does not work with every cheap Bluetooth gadget on the market. It is primarily supported by modern Microsoft Surface accessories, modern Xbox controllers, and a growing number of premium third-party peripherals from brands like Logitech.
  • Bluetooth Enabled: Your Windows 11 PC must have a Bluetooth receiver, and it must be turned on.

How to Enable Swift Pair in Windows 11

While Swift Pair is incredibly convenient, it is not always enabled by default, as constantly scanning the environment for new devices can slightly impact battery life on laptops.

  1. Open the Windows 11 Settings app (you can press the Windows Key + I shortcut).
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Look for the main Bluetooth toggle switch near the top and ensure it is turned On.
  4. Click on the Devices box (which has a small right-facing arrow) to open the advanced device settings.
  5. Scroll down until you find the Device settings section.
  6. Locate the toggle switch labelled Show notifications to connect using Swift Pair and ensure it is turned On.

How to Connect Your Device

With the setting enabled, the actual pairing process is nearly effortless.

  1. Take your compatible Bluetooth peripheral (such as a Surface Mouse) and turn its physical power switch on.
  2. Put the device into “Pairing Mode”. The method varies by manufacturer, but it usually involves holding down a dedicated Bluetooth button on the bottom of the device for 3 to 5 seconds until an LED light begins to blink rapidly.
  3. Place the device close to your Windows 11 PC.

Within a few seconds, Windows 11 will detect the signal. A large notification toast will slide into the bottom right corner of your screen (just above the system tray). The notification will typically show the exact name of the device and a picture of it.

Simply click the Connect button inside that notification.

Windows will handle the entire handshake protocol in the background. A few seconds later, the notification will change to say “Your device is ready to go”, and your mouse or keyboard will begin working immediately. You never need to open the Settings menu.
