Sleep mode is a fundamental power management feature in Windows 11. When activated, it halts almost all hardware activity, saves your current session state (open documents, browser tabs, and running applications) to RAM, and places the PC in a low-power state. This allows you to resume your work instantly by simply tapping a key or moving the mouse. However, there are many scenarios where you absolutely do not want your computer to sleep. If you are running a Plex media server, compiling large codebases, downloading massive game files overnight, or hosting a local multiplayer server, your PC going to sleep will instantly terminate those tasks and sever all network connections.
This guide explains how to completely disable Sleep mode system-wide in Windows 11, ensuring your PC remains awake and active 24/7 until you manually shut it down.
Disable Sleep Mode via the Settings App
The most straightforward way to prevent your computer from sleeping is by adjusting the core Power & Battery settings.
- Press the Windows Key + I to open the main Windows 11 Settings app.
- In the left-hand sidebar, ensure System is selected.
- In the main pane, click on Power & battery (on desktop PCs, this may just be labelled “Power”).
- Scroll down and click to expand the section labelled Screen and sleep.
- You will see drop-down menus for both battery power (if you are on a laptop) and plugged-in power. Locate the setting that says When plugged in, put my device to sleep after.
- Click the drop-down menu and scroll all the way to the bottom of the list. Select Never.
- If you are using a laptop, repeat the process for the On battery power, put my device to sleep after setting, changing it to Never as well.
Disable Sleep via the Legacy Control Panel (Advanced)
If the modern Settings app fails to apply the change, or if a rogue background app keeps putting your PC to sleep, you can force the change via the legacy Control Panel.
- Click the Start button, type Control Panel, and hit Enter.
- Change the “View by” option in the top right to Large icons.
- Click on Power Options.
- On the left-hand side of the window, click the link that says Change when the computer sleeps.
- In the “Put the computer to sleep” drop-down menu(s), select Never.
- Click the Save changes button.
Your Windows 11 PC will now run continuously without interruption. Remember that disabling sleep mode will significantly increase your power consumption, particularly if you also disable the display timeout setting alongside it.
