How to Change the Default Browser in Windows 11

The Monopolistic Override Vector

Microsoft aggressively integrates its proprietary Edge browser into the core of Windows 11. By default, every single PDF file, web link, and HTML document you double-click will instantly launch Edge, regardless of whether you have already downloaded and installed Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Brave. If you prefer an alternative browser ecosystem for your daily workflow, you must explicitly instruct the operating system to sever its reliance on Edge and route all web traffic to your chosen application.

How to Change the Default Browser

Microsoft has intentionally made this process slightly convoluted in Windows 11 compared to previous versions, requiring you to navigate a specific settings matrix.

1. First, ensure your preferred browser (e.g., Google Chrome) is fully downloaded and installed on your system.
2. Open the Start Menu and click the Settings gear icon (or press the Windows Key + I).
3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Apps.
4. In the main pane, click on Default apps.
5. You will see a search bar at the top labelled “Search apps”. Type the name of your preferred browser (e.g., Chrome) into this box.
6. The icon for Chrome will appear below the search bar. Click on it.
7. You are now on the file association page for Chrome. Look at the absolute top of the screen.
8. You will see a prominent banner asking if you want to make Google Chrome your default browser. Click the Set default button.

A small checkmark will appear next to the button. Windows 11 will automatically sweep through the list of file associations below (`.htm`, `.html`, HTTP, HTTPS) and instantly swap them from Edge to Chrome. Any link you click from this moment forward will launch your chosen browser.
