In Windows 11, the entire visual layout of your screen—including the transparency effects, the Start Menu, the taskbar, and the smooth animations when you minimize a window—is controlled by a single background process called the Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe). If a graphics driver crashes or an application misbehaves, this process can lock up.
When the Desktop Window Manager freezes, your computer becomes almost unusable. The taskbar clock will stop ticking, you will not be able to click on the Start Menu, and windows will leave “ghost trails” when you drag them across the screen. You do not have to hold the physical power button and force a hard reboot; you can use the Task Manager to manually kill the visual engine.
How to Manually Restart the Windows 11 Desktop Window Manager
You must use the Task Manager to kill the process. Windows will automatically restart it.
- Because your taskbar is frozen, you cannot click the Start button. You must press Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard simultaneously to force the Task Manager to open. (If that shortcut fails, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and click Task Manager).
- If your Task Manager opens in a small window, click More details at the bottom.
- Ensure you are on the Processes tab (the icon on the far left of the new Windows 11 Task Manager).
- Scroll down the massive list of background processes. Look for the “Windows processes” section near the bottom.
- Locate the process named Desktop Window Manager.
- Right-click on Desktop Window Manager and select End task.
- A severe warning box will appear, cautioning you that ending this process will cause Windows to become unstable. Check the box that says “Abandon unsaved data and shut down” (if prompted) and click Shut down or End process.
The instant you click the button, your entire screen will flash black, and your desktop wallpaper will vanish. Do not panic. Within two to three seconds, Windows 11 will automatically relaunch the Desktop Window Manager. Your taskbar, wallpaper, and desktop icons will reappear, completely unfrozen and fully responsive.
