In collaborative enterprise environments, broadcasting critical project updates or emergency operational notices across a project channel can be challenging if team members have muted general channel notifications. While mentioning individuals one by one with @Name is time-consuming and risks overlooking colleagues, sending an unmentioned post often goes unnoticed in busy workspaces. Microsoft Teams provides dedicated channel-level mention syntax that sends a focused activity alert to every member tracking that specific workstream.
Using the @Channel Mention in a Post
To notify everyone who has added or followed a specific channel:
- Launch Microsoft Teams on desktop, mobile, or web.
- Select the Teams icon on the left-hand navigation rail.
- Navigate to the team and expand the specific channel where you wish to publish an announcement.
- Click the Start a post button at the bottom of the channel feed (or press
Ctrl + N). - In the message compose box, type the
@symbol followed immediately by the exact word channel (or type@and the channel’s actual name, e.g.@Design-Updates). - Teams displays a suggestion card showing the channel name with a multi-person silhouette icon.
- Press
Enteror click the suggested tag to insert the blue interactive mention badge. - Type your message content and click the Post (paper aeroplane) button to dispatch.
Every member of the parent team who actively tracks that channel will immediately receive a red Activity feed badge and a desktop notification banner.
Distinguishing Between @Channel, @Team, and @General
Selecting the appropriate mention scope maintains communication etiquette across large organisations:
- @Channel: Notifies only the members actively following that particular channel. It avoids spamming colleagues who belong to the overarching department but work on unrelated sub-projects.
- @Team: Dispatches a system-wide alert to every single person in the parent team, regardless of which channels they monitor. Use sparingly for company-wide announcements.
- @General: Alerts everyone across the default general channel. In large teams with hundreds of members, team owners often restrict posting permissions in General to administrators to minimise notification fatigue.
Configuring Channel Mention Permissions as Team Owner
To prevent notification noise in high-volume public channels, team owners can manage who is permitted to trigger channel-wide pings:
- Click the More options button (
…) next to the team name in your sidebar. - Select Manage team from the menu.
- Switch to the Settings tab at the top.
- Expand the @mentions section.
- Uncheck or toggle Give members the option to use @channel or @[channel name] if you wish to restrict channel broadcasting strictly to team owners.
