How to Stop Microsoft Teams from Automatically Lowering Your Microphone Volume

If you regularly use Microsoft Teams for meetings, you may have experienced a frustrating issue where your microphone volume drops automatically while you are speaking. This happens because Teams, along with the Windows operating system, attempts to auto-adjust your microphone sensitivity based on background noise and speaking volume. While intended as a helpful feature, it often results in your colleagues being unable to hear you clearly.

Why Teams Lowers Your Microphone Volume

Microsoft Teams includes built-in audio processing features designed to optimize call quality. One of these features is automatic microphone sensitivity adjustment. When the software detects a loud noise or a spike in your voice, it aggressively lowers the input gain to prevent distortion. Unfortunately, it does not always return the volume to normal levels quickly, leaving your audio output too quiet.

Disable Automatic Mic Adjustment in Teams

The first step is to disable the auto-adjust feature directly within the Microsoft Teams application settings.

  1. Open the Microsoft Teams desktop application.
  2. Click on the Settings and more button (the three dots) located next to your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  3. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  4. Navigate to the Devices tab on the left-hand menu.
  5. Scroll down to the Microphone section.
  6. Toggle off the switch for Automatically adjust mic sensitivity.

Disabling this ensures that Teams will no longer attempt to override your system volume settings during active calls.

Disable Exclusive Control in Windows Sound Settings

If the issue persists after changing the Teams settings, Windows itself might be allowing Teams to take exclusive control of the microphone and alter its levels.

  1. Right-click the Speaker icon in your Windows 11 taskbar (bottom-right corner) and select Sound settings.
  2. Scroll down and click on More sound settings to open the classic Sound Control Panel.
  3. Navigate to the Recording tab.
  4. Right-click your active microphone (indicated by a green checkmark) and select Properties.
  5. Go to the Advanced tab.
  6. Under the Exclusive Mode section, uncheck the box for Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
  7. Click Apply and then OK to save the changes.

Disable Windows Communications Activity

Windows has a legacy feature that automatically reduces the volume of other sounds when it detects communication activity. While this primarily affects output volume, it can sometimes interfere with input devices depending on your audio drivers.

  1. Open the classic Sound Control Panel again via More sound settings.
  2. Navigate to the Communications tab.
  3. Under the section titled When Windows detects communications activity, select the Do nothing option.
  4. Click Apply and OK.

By preventing both Teams and Windows from managing your audio levels automatically, your microphone volume will remain consistently at the level you set manually.
