How to Automatically Unlock Your Chromebook with Your Android Phone

Typing your complex Google account password every time you open your Chromebook can quickly become tedious, especially if you step away from your desk frequently. To streamline your workflow, Google Chrome OS includes a feature called Smart Lock. This feature pairs your Chromebook with your Android smartphone via Bluetooth, allowing your laptop to automatically unlock itself whenever your unlocked phone is nearby.

How to Connect Your Android Phone to Your Chromebook

Before you can enable Smart Lock, your Chromebook and your Android phone must be connected through the Chrome OS Phone Hub. Both devices must be signed into the exact same Google account, and Bluetooth must be turned on for both.

1. Click the clock icon in the bottom right corner of your Chromebook screen to open the Quick Settings panel.
2. Click the Settings (gear) icon.
3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Connected devices.
4. Under the Android phone section, click the Set up button.
5. A window will appear displaying the Android devices linked to your Google account. Select your primary phone from the dropdown list and click Accept & Continue.
6. Enter your Google account password to verify your identity, and click Done.

Your phone is now officially tethered to your Chromebook.

How to Enable the Smart Lock Feature

With the devices connected, you can now activate the specific unlock automation.

1. Return to the Connected devices menu in the Chromebook Settings.
2. Click directly on the name of your connected Android phone to open its specific settings.
3. Locate the Smart Lock option and click the toggle switch to turn it on.
4. Click the small arrow next to the Smart Lock toggle to open the sub-menu.
5. Ensure the setting is toggled to Unlock device only (the “Unlock device and sign in to Google Account” option is less secure and generally unnecessary for daily use).

How to Use Smart Lock in Daily Practice

The next time you wake your Chromebook from sleep, look at the lock icon near your profile picture. If your Android phone is within Bluetooth range (usually about 30 feet) and is currently unlocked, the lock icon on the Chromebook screen will turn green and spin open. You no longer need to type your password; simply click your profile picture or press the Enter key to access your desktop immediately.
