Microsoft PowerPoint’s Presenter View is one of the most powerful tools available to public speakers, corporate trainers, and students. By displaying your active slide alongside a running stopwatch timer, your private speaker notes, and a preview of the upcoming slide, Presenter View keeps you confident and perfectly paced during high-stakes presentations. However, PowerPoint is designed by default to enable Presenter View only when it detects two connected displays: your computer screen and an external projector.
When you are sitting on a train, working from home on a single laptop screen, or rehearsing a speech the night before in a hotel room, you rarely have an external monitor connected. Fortunately, PowerPoint includes a dedicated keyboard shortcut that forces Presenter View to run on a single monitor. In this guide, you will learn how to launch and rehearse with Presenter View on a single display across Windows and Mac.
Why Use Presenter View on a Single Display?
Rehearsing with Presenter View on a single screen offers major preparation benefits:
- Flawless speech rehearsals: Practice your presentation pacing while checking elapsed minutes against your private bullet points.
- Virtual video calls on a single screen: With software window sharing tools, you can review your speaking notes privately while broadcasting only the slide contents to meeting participants.
- Pre-presentation slide navigation: Jump directly to specific slides using the thumbnail grid without cycling through intermediate slides publicly.
Method 1: Use the Keyboard Shortcut on Windows (Fastest)
To launch Presenter View directly from editing mode on a single Windows screen:
- Open your slide deck in Microsoft PowerPoint.
- Press the shortcut Alt + F5 on your keyboard. (On laptops where function keys are mapped to media controls, press Alt + Fn + F5).
- PowerPoint immediately opens directly into full-screen Presenter View on your single display.
You can read your speaker notes on the right, zoom in on diagrams, and monitor the clock. To exit Presenter View at any time, press Esc.
Method 2: Launch via Slide Show Context Menu
If you have already started a standard full-screen slide show on your single monitor:
- Press F5 to launch your presentation normally.
- Right-click anywhere on the active slide.
- From the context menu, select Show Presenter View.
- The display instantly switches into Presenter View.
Method 3: How to Use Presenter View on Mac with One Screen
On macOS, PowerPoint provides a dedicated menu bar command:
- Open your presentation in PowerPoint for Mac.
- Click on the Slide Show tab in the ribbon.
- Hold down the Option key on your keyboard.
- Notice that the “Play from Start” button changes to Play in Presenter View. Click it.
- Alternatively, start the slide show normally, click the three dots (…) in the bottom-left controls, and choose Use Presenter View.
