Running a continuous, unattended presentation is essential for trade show booths, retail information kiosks, corporate lobby displays, and digital signage. In a default PowerPoint presentation, reaching the final slide displays a blank screen and exits Slide Show mode. By enabling PowerPoint’s native loop setting, you can configure your deck to restart automatically from slide one indefinitely until an operator manually intervenes by pressing the Escape key.
Configuring the Continuous Loop in Slide Show Setup
The continuous loop behaviour is configured within the Slide Show setup dialogue box. This setting applies to the specific presentation file and persists across saves.
- Open your presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint.
- Click the Slide Show tab on the main ribbon toolbar.
- In the Set Up group, click Set Up Slide Show.
- In the dialogue box that appears, locate the Show options section.
- Check the box labelled Loop continuously until ‘Esc’.
- Under Show type, select Presented by a speaker (full screen) for standard cycling, or select Browsed at a kiosk (full screen) if you want to lock navigation so visitors cannot accidentally advance slides using mouse clicks.
- Click OK to confirm your configuration.
Setting Automatic Slide Transition Timings
A looped slide show requires automated timing triggers; otherwise, the presentation will remain paused on the first slide waiting for manual input.
- Switch to the Transitions tab on the ribbon.
- In the Timing group on the far right, look for the Advance Slide options.
- Uncheck the box next to On Mouse Click.
- Check the box labelled After, then enter the duration (in seconds) each slide should remain visible on screen (for example,
00:08.00for 8 seconds). - Click the Apply to All button to enforce uniform timing across all slides.
If specific slides contain video clips, complex charts, or extensive reading material, you can select those individual slides in the left thumbnail panel and assign a custom, longer duration without affecting the rest of the presentation.
Testing and Exiting the Looped Presentation
Once timings and loop parameters are configured, test the presentation from the beginning:
- Press F5 on your keyboard (or click From Beginning on the Slide Show tab).
- Allow the slides to cycle automatically through to the final slide.
- Verify that the deck immediately loops back to the title slide without showing a black transition screen.
- To terminate the slide show at any point, press the Esc key on your keyboard.
