How to Change Slide Size to Widescreen or Standard in PowerPoint

Delivering an effective slide presentation requires matching your deck aspect ratio to the physical display hardware in your venue. If you project a standard 4:3 presentation onto a modern 16:9 widescreen television or conference room projector, unsightly black pillarbox bars appear along the left and right edges. Conversely, projecting widescreen slides onto legacy projectors compresses content. In Microsoft PowerPoint, you can reconfigure slide dimensions across an entire presentation with built-in layout controls.

Switching Between Widescreen and Standard Slide Dimensions

Slide size configurations in PowerPoint reside on the Design tab and apply globally across all slides and slide masters.

  1. Open your presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint.
  2. Click the Design tab on the main ribbon toolbar.
  3. In the Customise group on the far right, click the Slide Size button.
  4. Select your desired aspect ratio from the drop-down menu:
    • Standard (4:3): Generates slides measuring 25.4 cm × 19.05 cm (10 in × 7.5 in). Best suited for legacy overhead projectors, classroom smartboards, and printed portrait handouts.
    • Widescreen (16:9): Generates slides measuring 33.867 cm × 19.05 cm (13.333 in × 7.5 in). This is the default format for modern PowerPoint installations, laptop monitors, televisions, and virtual webinars.

Choosing Between “Maximize” and “Ensure Fit”

When converting an existing presentation containing text boxes, images, and shapes, PowerPoint displays a crucial scaling dialogue asking how content should adapt to the new aspect ratio:

  • Maximize: Scales your graphics and background assets up to occupy every millimetre of the new slide area. While this prevents blank borders, it may crop the outer edges of photographs or cause large text elements to spill beyond the canvas margins.
  • Ensure Fit: Scales content down proportionally so that every graphic, table, and caption remains visible on the slide. While this guarantees no content is cropped, it may introduce temporary letterboxing around certain background images.

For existing decks with delicate typography and diagram layouts, selecting Ensure Fit is generally recommended to prevent accidental element cropping.

Setting Custom Slide Dimensions and Orientations

If you are designing conference research posters, promotional flyers, or vertical smartphone presentations, you can define arbitrary physical measurements:

  1. Go to Design > Slide Size > Custom Slide Size….
  2. In the dialogue box, click the Slides sized for: drop-down menu to select preset document standards (such as A4 Paper, A3 Paper, or Banner).
  3. Alternatively, enter exact numerical values into the Width and Height input boxes.
  4. Under Orientation, toggle between Landscape and Portrait.
  5. Click OK and choose your scaling preference to apply the custom dimensions.
