The Intrusive Autocomplete
As you type an email or a document in Windows 11, you may notice small, ghostly words appearing ahead of your cursor, suggesting how to finish your sentence. If you press the Tab key or the right arrow, Windows will automatically insert that suggested text. While this feature, ported over from smartphone keyboards, can speed up typing for some users, it can be highly distracting and deeply annoying for fast touch-typists who find the constant visual flickering and accidental text insertions disruptive to their workflow.
How to Disable Text Suggestions
Windows 11 manages this feature globally at the operating system level, meaning you can turn it off once in the Settings menu and it will stop appearing in Mail, Edge, Word, and Notepad simultaneously.
1. Open the Start menu and click the gear icon to launch Settings.
2. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Time & language.
3. In the main window, click on Typing.
4. Look at the very top of the list for a toggle switch labelled Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard.
5. Click the toggle to switch it to the Off position.
How to Disable Multilingual Text Suggestions
If you type in multiple languages and Windows is aggressively trying to guess which language you are using, resulting in bizarre or incorrect autocomplete suggestions, you can disable the multilingual prediction engine while leaving the core feature intact (if you prefer).
1. Navigate back to Settings > Time & language > Typing.
2. Look slightly further down the page for the toggle labelled Multilingual text suggestions.
3. Turn this toggle Off.
With this disabled, Windows will strictly rely on the specific keyboard layout you currently have active in your system tray, rather than constantly analyzing your keystrokes to guess your language.
