How to Stop the macOS Mail App from Automatically Downloading Remote Images

Why You Should Disable Remote Image Loading

By default, the Apple Mail application on macOS automatically downloads and displays remote images embedded in emails. While this makes newsletters and promotional emails look visually appealing, it also poses a privacy risk. Senders and marketing agencies use tiny, invisible tracking pixels embedded in these images to determine exactly when you opened the email, what device you used, and your approximate geographical location based on your IP address. If privacy is a priority, disabling this feature is essential.

Preventing Automatic Image Downloads in Apple Mail

macOS allows you to easily block these automatic downloads, ensuring your email habits remain private.

1. Open the Mail application on your Mac.

2. In the top menu bar, click on Mail and select Settings (or Preferences on older versions of macOS).

3. Click on the Privacy tab at the top of the settings window.

4. Look for the Protect Mail Activity checkbox. If it is enabled, Mail already hides your IP address and privately loads content in the background, which offers significant protection.

5. If you want manual control over every image, untick Protect Mail Activity.

6. Two new options will appear. Ensure the box next to Block All Remote Content is ticked.

Loading Images Manually

Once you have enabled the block on remote content, marketing emails will initially appear mostly as plain text with empty image placeholders. This entirely prevents tracking pixels from triggering.

If you receive a legitimate email from a trusted sender and want to see the visual content, simply look for the banner at the top of the email message that says “This message contains remote content.” Click the Load Remote Content button on the right side of the banner, and the images will download securely for that specific email only.
