We all have the muscle memory built in: you unlock your phone, see a cluttered notification shade, and immediately swipe left to clear them all away. But exactly one millisecond after you dismiss a notification, you realize it was actually an important email from your boss or a text message containing a verification code.
In older versions of Android, once a notification was swiped away, it was gone forever. There was no “undo” button. However, Google introduced a brilliant, deeply hidden feature called “Notification History” that keeps a running log of every single alert your phone has received in the last 24 hours.
Because it logs private information, this feature is turned off by default. You must proactively enable it before you accidentally delete an important alert. This guide explains how to turn on Notification History on your Android device.
Step 1: Enable Notification History
The exact location of this setting might vary slightly depending on whether you are using a Google Pixel, a Samsung Galaxy, or a Motorola device, but it is generally found in the main Notifications menu.
- Open the Settings app on your Android smartphone.
- Scroll down and tap on Notifications.
- Look for a menu item labeled Notification history. (On some Samsung phones, you might need to tap “Advanced settings” first to find it).
- Tap the toggle switch to turn Use notification history to the On position.
From this exact moment forward, your phone will begin silently logging every text, email, app alert, and silent background notification that hits your device.
Step 2: How to View Your Deleted Notifications
The next time you accidentally swipe away a critical alert, do not panic. Retrieving it takes less than five seconds.
- Swipe down from the top of your screen to open your notification shade.
- Look at the very bottom of the shade, directly underneath any active notifications you currently have.
- You will see a small button labeled History. Tap it.
You are now looking at your Notification History log. It is broken down into two sections:
- Recently dismissed: This shows the exact alerts you just swiped away in the last few minutes, perfect for instantly recovering that verification code.

Important Note: The history log is not interactive in the same way standard notifications are. You cannot tap a “Reply” button from inside the history log. However, if you tap the body of the notification itself, it will instantly launch the corresponding app (like Gmail or Messages) and take you straight to the conversation or email thread.
