Adding a checkmark (also known as a tick) is one of the most effective ways to visually indicate that a task is complete, an item is approved, or data has been verified in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. However, unlike standard letters and numbers, you cannot simply type a checkmark using a normal key on your keyboard.
While you could insert complex interactive checkboxes using the Developer tab, sometimes you just need a simple, static checkmark symbol inside a cell.
In this guide, you will learn the fastest ways to insert a checkmark symbol in Excel using keyboard shortcuts, the symbol menu, and special fonts.
Method 1: Use the Symbol Menu (Easiest Method)
If you do not want to memorize any shortcuts, the built-in Symbol menu is the most reliable way to find a checkmark.
- Click on the cell where you want the checkmark to appear.
- Navigate to the Insert tab on the top ribbon.
- On the far right side of the ribbon, click the Symbol button (represented by an Omega icon Ω).
- A window will open. Click the Font dropdown menu and select Wingdings (scroll all the way to the bottom of the list).
- Scroll down to the very bottom of the Wingdings character list. You will find a checkmark (and a checkmark inside a box) on the last row.
- Select the checkmark and click Insert, then click Close.
Method 2: The Wingdings Font Shortcut
If you need to insert checkmarks frequently, this method is significantly faster than opening the Symbol menu every time.
- Click the cell where you want the checkmark.
- Go to the Home tab and change the cell’s font to Wingdings 2.
- Type a capital P (Hold Shift and press P).
- The letter “P” will instantly turn into a perfect checkmark.
Note: If you type a capital “O” using the Wingdings 2 font, it will create an “X” mark, which is perfect for showing incomplete tasks!
Method 3: The Windows Emoji Keyboard Shortcut
If you are using Windows 10 or Windows 11, you can insert a modern, colorful checkmark using the built-in emoji keyboard.
- Double-click the cell where you want the checkmark.
- Press the Windows key + Period (.) simultaneously. This will open the Windows Emoji panel.
- In the search bar at the top of the emoji panel, type the word check.
- Click the green checkmark emoji (✔️) to insert it into the cell.
Enhancing Your Spreadsheets
By learning how to quickly insert a checkmark symbol, you can make your tracking sheets, inventory logs, and project dashboards significantly easier to read at a glance without relying on complex macros or developer tools.
