In Microsoft Excel, whenever you highlight a block of data—whether it’s two cells or two hundred—a small icon featuring a lightning bolt automatically pops up in the bottom right corner of your selection. This is the “Quick Analysis” tool. It offers fast shortcuts to create charts, add conditional formatting, or calculate totals. While useful for beginners, many advanced users find this floating icon incredibly distracting. It often gets in the way of the bottom-right fill handle or obscures adjacent data. If you prefer to use the main ribbon or keyboard shortcuts, you can turn this pop-up off completely.
How to Hide the Quick Analysis Tool
Hiding this pop-up is a global setting in Excel. Once you disable it, the icon will stop appearing in all of your future and existing spreadsheets.
- Open Microsoft Excel.
- Click on the File tab located in the top-left corner of the window.
- Look at the very bottom of the left-hand blue sidebar and click on Options. (You may need to click ‘More…’ first to see it).
- The “Excel Options” dialogue box will appear on your screen. Ensure you are on the General tab in the left-hand menu.
- Look at the very first section, titled “User Interface options”.
- Locate the checkbox labelled Show Quick Analysis options on selection.
- Click the checkbox to uncheck it.
- Click the OK button at the bottom right of the window to save your changes.
From now on, you can highlight as much data as you want, and the lightning bolt icon will no longer appear.
How to Access it Manually
Disabling the automatic pop-up doesn’t delete the feature from Excel. If you ever want to use the Quick Analysis tool for a specific task, simply highlight your data and press Ctrl + Q on your keyboard. The menu will instantly appear exactly as it did before, but only when you explicitly ask for it.
