Microsoft Edge includes a built-in password manager designed to make your life easier. Whenever you visit a website and click inside a registration form to create a new account, Edge will automatically pop up a dropdown menu suggesting a highly complex, randomly generated password.
While this is an excellent security feature, it can be incredibly irritating if you already use a dedicated third-party password manager like 1Password or Bitwarden. When two password managers are active at the same time, their popup menus will frequently overlap, block text boxes, and fight for control over your form fields.
To keep your browsing experience clean and allow your primary password manager to work without interference, you must disable Edge’s native password suggestion feature.
How to Turn Off Password Suggestions in Edge
You can manage this behavior in Edge’s internal wallet settings.
- Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
- Click the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Profiles.
- In the right pane, under the “Your profile” section, click on Passwords. (You may be prompted to enter your Windows PIN or password to proceed).
- Scroll down the Passwords settings page until you see the section for generating new credentials.
- Look for a toggle switch labeled Suggest strong passwords.
- Turn this toggle to the Off position.
Edge will immediately stop injecting its own generated passwords into registration forms, allowing your third-party password manager to handle the heavy lifting natively without any visual clutter.
