How to Stop Microsoft Edge from Automatically Hiding the Title Bar (Vertical Tabs)

One of the most popular features in Microsoft Edge is “Vertical Tabs,” which moves your open tabs from the top of the browser to a collapsible sidebar on the left. By default, when you activate Vertical Tabs, Edge automatically hides the main Title Bar at the very top of the window to maximize your vertical screen real estate. This makes the browser look incredibly sleek and modern.

However, hiding the title bar removes the large, empty grab handle at the top of the window. If you are a user who frequently clicks and drags windows around your desktop to snap them into split-screen layouts, removing the title bar makes it incredibly difficult to grab the Edge window. You end up accidentally clicking on the window controls (minimize/maximize) or clicking blank space near the address bar, which feels cramped and imprecise.

You can dive into Edge’s Appearance settings to explicitly decouple these two features, allowing you to use Vertical Tabs on the left while simultaneously keeping the large, draggable Title Bar permanently visible at the top.

How to Keep the Title Bar with Vertical Tabs

You must disable the specific UI override rule within the browser’s Appearance menu.

  1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
  2. Click the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner.
  3. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
  4. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Appearance.
  5. Scroll down the page to the “Customize toolbar” section.
  6. Ensure that Show vertical tabs for all current browser windows is toggled On (if that is your preference).
  7. Directly below that, locate the setting labeled Hide title bar while in vertical tabs.
  8. Turn this toggle to the Off position.

The top of your Microsoft Edge window will instantly shift downwards, revealing the thick, native Windows title bar. You now have a massive, empty strip across the top of the browser that you can easily click and drag, without having to sacrifice the organizational benefits of the vertical tab layout.
