Microsoft PowerPoint includes a built-in spell checker that actively scans your text as you type, underlining unrecognized or misspelled words with a jagged red squiggly line. While this feature is indispensable when writing long-form documents in Microsoft Word, it can be highly problematic in PowerPoint. Presentations frequently rely on acronyms, brand names, technical jargon, or stylized typography that the standard dictionary does not recognize. Delivering a live presentation or sharing a slide deck covered in red error lines looks unprofessional and distracts the audience from your message.
This guide explains how to completely disable the automatic spell check and hide the red squiggly lines in Microsoft PowerPoint.
Disable Spell Check for the Entire Application
To completely stop PowerPoint from checking your spelling across all current and future presentations, you must adjust the global proofing options.
- Launch Microsoft PowerPoint and open a presentation.
- Click the File tab located in the top-left corner of the Ribbon interface.
- At the bottom of the left-hand menu, select Options to open the PowerPoint Options dialogue box.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Proofing.
- Scroll down to the section labelled When correcting spelling in PowerPoint.
- Uncheck the box next to Check spelling as you type.
- Click OK at the bottom of the window to apply your changes.
The red squiggly lines will immediately vanish from your slides. PowerPoint will no longer monitor your keystrokes for errors, giving you total freedom to use custom acronyms and stylized text without visual interruption.
Hide Spelling Errors in the Current Presentation Only
If you generally prefer to leave the spell checker active to catch genuine typos but want to suppress the red lines for a final, polished deck that contains lots of jargon, you can disable the visual warnings for that specific file.
- Return to the Proofing menu (File > Options > Proofing).
- Scroll down to the very bottom section, labelled Exceptions for:.
- Ensure the drop-down menu displays the name of your current presentation file.
- Check the box labelled Hide spelling and grammar errors.
- Click OK.
This setting is embedded directly into the presentation file. This means that if you email the deck to a colleague or display it on a different computer, the red squiggly lines will remain hidden, preserving the professional appearance of your slides regardless of the recipient’s personal PowerPoint settings.
