By default, Microsoft Edge acts as the default PDF viewer in Windows, intercepting any PDF file you click on a webpage and rendering it directly within the browser tab. While this is convenient for quick reading, it is highly problematic in professional environments. The built-in Edge viewer often struggles to correctly render complex fillable forms, digitally signed documents, or CAD-generated schematics. If you rely on a dedicated, professional-grade application like Adobe Acrobat Pro or Foxit PDF Editor, you must force Edge to stop hijacking these files and download them to your local disk instead.

Disable the PDF Viewer via Edge Settings
To restore control over your document workflow, we must change the default handling behaviour within the browser’s site permissions menu.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the three horizontal dots (Settings and more) located in the top-right corner of the window.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Cookies and site permissions.
- Scroll down the right-hand pane until you reach the “All permissions” section.
- Find and click on PDF documents.
- You will see a toggle switch labelled Always download PDF files.
- Tap the switch to toggle it to the On position (it will turn blue).
Verify the New Workflow
This setting change takes effect immediately without requiring a browser restart.
To verify the restriction is active, navigate to a webpage hosting a public PDF document (such as a user manual or a tax form) and click the link. Instead of opening a new tab and rendering the document, Edge will instantly trigger a standard file download, placing the file into your default Downloads folder. You can now open the file from your local disk using your preferred, feature-rich PDF application, ensuring all complex formatting and interactive fields operate exactly as intended.
