In Windows 11 Home edition, Microsoft aggressively enforces a feature called “Device Encryption” (a streamlined version of BitLocker) on most modern laptops and pre-built desktops. If you sign into your computer using a Microsoft Account, the operating system silently encrypts your entire C:\ drive in the background and uploads the recovery key to Microsoft’s cloud servers. This protects your data if your laptop is stolen.
However, this forced encryption introduces massive headaches for power users. If your motherboard suffers a hardware failure, or if you need to use a Linux live USB to recover files from an unbootable Windows partition, Device Encryption will completely lock you out of your own data unless you have the 48-digit recovery key perfectly memorized or accessible from another device. Furthermore, software-based encryption introduces a slight performance penalty on budget SSDs. If you rely on physical security for your desktop PC and want to ensure your hard drive is always readable by other operating systems in an emergency, you must completely disable Device Encryption.
Disabling Device Encryption via Privacy Settings
Because Windows 11 Home lacks the dedicated “Manage BitLocker” control panel found in the Pro edition, you must disable the encryption through the modern Settings app.
- Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + i).
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
- In the main panel, look under the “Security” section and click on Device encryption.
- You will see a master toggle switch labelled Device encryption.
- Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.
- A severe warning popup will appear, informing you that decryption takes a long time and that your files will not be protected. Click Turn off to confirm.
Waiting for the Decryption Process
Do not instantly reboot your computer. The operating system must now read every single encrypted sector on your hard drive and write it back as plaintext.
- You can continue to use your computer normally while this happens in the background.
- The Settings app will display a progress bar indicating the decryption status.
- Depending on the speed of your SSD and the size of your drive, this process can take anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours.
Once the progress bar disappears and the toggle remains permanently Off, your hard drive is fully decrypted. If you physically remove the SSD and plug it into a Linux machine or an external USB enclosure, the files will be immediately accessible without requiring a 48-digit recovery key.
